Frequently Asked Questions
Start with mission essentials: magazine pouches on the front (typically 3 rifle mags), IFAK/medical kit accessible by either hand, radio pouch on the non-dominant side, and admin pouch for small items. Keep the front relatively low-profile so you can go prone. Place heavier items (like water bladders) on the back. Add a knife or multi-tool within reach. Position a tourniquet where both hands can grab it. Avoid overloading—start minimal and add only what you need.
In most U.S. states, it is legal for civilians to own and wear plate carriers and body armor in public. However, some states (like Connecticut) restrict body armor for those with felony convictions, and wearing armor during the commission of a crime carries additional penalties everywhere. Local regulations may vary, and private businesses can prohibit armor on their premises. For concealed carry, Safe Life Defense offers concealable carriers designed to be worn discreetly under clothing.
The top of your front plate should sit at the sternal notch—the small dip at the base of your neck between your collarbones. This positions the plate to cover your heart, lungs, and major blood vessels. The bottom of the plate should be approximately at your navel or slightly above. If the plate sits too low, it leaves your heart exposed; too high, and it interferes with your chin and doesn't protect your liver. The back plate should mirror this positioning.
Remove all plates, pouches, and accessories before cleaning. Hand wash with our Pro-Cleaner and lukewarm water, scrub with a soft brush, rinse thoroughly, and air dry completely (never machine dry). For stubborn odors, use our Pro-Refresher. Never use bleach or harsh chemicals as they can degrade the fabric and stitching. Some carriers have removable padding that can be washed separately. Store fully dry to prevent mold.
Your plate carrier should be snug but not restrictive. The "flat hand test" is a good guide: you should be able to slide a flat hand between the cummerbund and your body, but not a fist. The carrier shouldn't shift more than an inch in any direction during movement. You should be able to breathe deeply without restriction and raise your arms fully. If it's too loose, it will bounce and shift; too tight, and it restricts breathing and causes fatigue.
Store your plate carrier flat or hanging in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight, which can degrade the materials over time. Remove plates if storing long-term to prevent permanent deformation of the carrier fabric. Ensure the carrier is completely dry before storage to prevent mold and mildew. Avoid compressing or folding the carrier, which can damage internal stiffeners. Store plates vertically in a dedicated rack to prevent warping.
